A community is often judged by how well it takes care of its own.

The Compton Veterans Stand Down began in 2003; and is the exclusive Stand Down of
For the Love of Our Veterans” and the Compton Chamber of Commerce.

Compton Veterans Stand Down is orchestrated, coordinated, and implemented by the Compton Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's mission is to facilitate the organization of all activities aiming to meet the needs of our veterans and their families.

The mission of “For the love of our Veterans” is to identify and address the issues faced by the veterans; especially those veterans who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

The Compton Veterans Stand Down carries the philosophy of all nationwide Stand Downs:

“A Hand Up!”

The Veterans Administration estimates that 250,000 Veterans are homeless on any given night; and over the course of a year, approximately twice that many Veterans experience homelessness.

Additionally, about one-third of the adult homeless population are Veterans. America’s homeless Veterans have served in World War II, the Korea War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Afghanistan and Iraq. Nearly half of homeless Veterans served during the Vietnam era.

The Compton Veterans Stand Down is a collaborative event, coordinated between the local VA Medical Centers, other government agencies and community-based service providers.

The Compton Veterans Stand Down event brings together over a scheduled “three-day weekend,”

  • healthcare organizations,

  • Veterans Administration,

  • Legal Aid, and

  • a variety of volunteers and other organizations and components,

to assist in creating a permanent path of stability to the Homeless Veterans.
